Notes on emigrants to the USA
--------------------------------------------------

1) Charles Herbert and Arthur F emigrated to the USA, arriving at Ellis Island, New York on 18 May 1910 aboard the White Star liner, 'Majestic'. From there they travelled by train to Palo Alto to meet up with sister Alice and brother-in-law Frank (MILLS). A diary of the journey was compiled by Charles - the original is currently in the possession of Ron and Maureen Willis, Palo Alto, CA. A copy is available from the Barry and Patricia WOODS web site at http://www.btinternet.com/~woodsbj/

2) Charles must have later returned to England (presumably Frittenden) as the Ellis Island records show that he returned to the USA, arriving back 3 Feb 1922 aboard the Cunard liner, 'Aquitania'. He describes his final residence as with brother Arthur BEARSBY at 115 Webster Street, Aplo Alto, CA. In this immigration record, he is described as 5ft 8ins tall, with brown hair and blue eyes. Note - 115 Webster Street was built by Arthur F BEARSBY in 1917.

3) Arthur and Charles were both born to Dive's second wife Sarah BUTLER (born Sarah SILBURN). Both died in Palo Alto. Arthur married Margaret Mary (Madge) MURPHY and had children but there is no record of Charles having married.

4) Family rumour has it that Daughter Alice and son Frank went to the USA in 1889, sailing from Liverpool. No records have been found.

5) Alice must have returned to England since she was married to Francis Richard (Frank) MILLS during Jun-Sep 1901 (GRO registration district of Cranbrook, ref number 2a 1705 - note that in the GRO 'index, Francis surname is shown as MILES).

6) Alice and Frank had a son Frederick in 1902.

7) There is no evidence (as yet) of them returning to the USA - however, a second son Herbet Frank (Bud) MILLS was born 27 Feb 1906 in Palo Alto. There is an immigration record of a Frank MILLS and Mrs Frank MILLS who arrived aboard the 'Deutschland' which departed from Dover and arrived New York 23 Dec 1904 - however, there was no child with them (Frederick) and they both gave their age as 29 years.

8) Alice must have again come back to England with son Herbert (possibly Frederick had been left in England) since they are recorded as having returned to New York aboard the Cunard liner 'Lusitania, departing from Liverpool, arriving 30 Oct 1908. The passenger manifest only shows Alice MILLS, age 38, Frederick MILLS, age 6 and Herbert MILLS, age 2. All three are described as 'US CITIZENS'

9) We know that Alice, husband Frank and the two boys were living in 580 Palo Alto Ave when Charles and Arthur arrived on 24 May 1910.

10) It is reputed that Frank MILLS was born 1860, was a market gardener and was employed by a Mark HOPKINS, owner of 640 acres and employing 30 gardeners. It is UNCLEAR whether Frank MILLS is a US or British citizen.
