Individual Note: William Bliss, a wine merchant in Southwark, London. In his will, amongst many other bequests, he left £400 to the village of Nether Heyford to provide for a Free School for a) all children living in Upper and Nether Heyford, Northamptonshire, and b) any child with the surname Bliss living within 5 miles. £100 was to be used to purchase a building and £300 was to be invested to allow for the school's upkeep.
The School opened in 1683. A "new" School was opened in January 1880.
The money that was invested and still helps pay for all exterior maintenance, hence the name The Bliss Charity School. The state pays for everything inside the school.
I am in the process of writing a short history of the School for our Village History Series; when completed I will post details.
The Bliss Family History Society meets here and all their Family History research is kept here.
